L’Arche Communities in D.C.

For Spring Break Katie and I went to hang out with the L’Arche communities in the DC area. We also visited organizations that are affiliated with serving individuals with disabilities. It was incredible to see how God prepared every moment of that trip, showering us with reminders that we are exactly where we are supposed to be. The next couple of blog posts will be about the organizations we visited and some of the experiences we had together.

One night after dinner with L’Arche some of the core members and the assistants randomly started throwing tied up, dirty napkins at each other. It was hilarious to see people of all ages acting like kids. We were all laughing. With a timeless and playful smile, a woman named Wanda looked at me and said something like, “Jean Vanier (the founder of L'Arche) once said that it is not inappropriate that we can throw orange peels at each other after dinner.” And then Wanda said, “That was very much in line with his desiring to be more human.”

L’Arche is a place where people have the space to be themselves. It’s a place where we can realize, “We are what God has made us...” (Eph 2:10).
