Everyday of this trip we have seen powerhouse organizations. Here is another one that blew me away...
The Arc's motto is “Working for a life that is like yours.” Arc organizations exist all over the nation to offer individuals with disabilities avenues of support, advocacy, and full participation in their communities.
The Arc of N.VA says, “The goal of advocacy is to bring change to society often in the form of social justice.” This organization works to promote inclusive education, equal employment opportunities, accessible and affordable housing, and transportation. A major focus for this organization is getting individuals out of institutions. The Arc also participates in the “Get rid of the R word” campaign and they were able to remove the word “retard” from Virginia’s legal language.
Statements from “The Arc Report”:
-“It is NOT reasonable to deny persons with disabilities the right to live among us in the community if needed supports are provided.”
-“Virginia is one of only 10 states that have not closed any state operated institutions for persons with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. With plans in place, eleven states have already closed all of their state-operated institutions”
- “Now is the time for disability reform in Virginia. It is no longer morally or fiscally responsible to invest in segregate settings for our citizens with disabilities.”
The Arc of Northern VA has co-executive directors, one who is able-bodied and the other has a disability. It was a joy to meet these leaders and see their incredible work. They are an important example of an important partnership between individuals with disabilities and individuals who are able-bodied. The church needs to have more individuals with disabilities in leadership positions.
